The size of the Marshall Islands fleet tells a Cinderella story about one of the most modern open registries in the world today, Clay Maitland’s International Registries Inc. (IRI).

This month, the International Chamber of Shipping released its annual Shipping Industry Flag State Performance Table for the fiscal year 2014/15.  It is available at the link below:

Shipping research firm Clarksons recently published a comparison of the top ten shipowning nations as meausured in gross tonnage in a feature the OGSR found enlightening. This article, originally published in the firm's May 2nd 2014 issue of Shipping Intelligence Weekly, reads as follows.

The Isle of Man is now the world's 14th largest registry as measured by gross registered tonnage according to Clarkson's World Research.

The Marshall Islands fleet surpassed 85 million gross tons at the end of September.

The world's third-largest registry is growing at a more rapid rate than each of the top two registries, Panama and Liberia.

The flag is benefiting from rising newbuilding deliveries increasing the global fleet size.

Its gross tonnage has risen almost 14% over the past year.
